Like a restraining order, a protection from abuse (PFA) order prohibits contact between an alleged abuser and the victim, along with any children involved. In some divorce situations, this means the defendant must leave the family home. It usually takes about 10 days for a hearing to take place after someone petitions for a PFA. If immediate help is necessary, the court will issue a temporary order or emergency protection from abuse (EPFA) order between the time the petition was filed and the hearing. A final protection from abuse order can last up to three years.
